The School of Good Citizenship: Overview

The School of Good CitizenshipNo one is born a citizen. You have to be taught what that means

– Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

The School of Good Citizenship, originally conceived as 6-days of multi-disciplinary art events and workshops occurring over three weekends in August to book-end the Republican Convention, is now a series of online events occurring from June through October aimed at sparking a public conversation about democracy and whose voice gets heard.

In collaboration with Charlotte-based artists and institutions, our purpose is to engage a broad, diverse community around civic engagement through visual art exhibitions, public art, film screenings, spoken word poetry, panels and artist workshop/discussions.

We are focusing our energies on North Carolina to foster civic engagement through creativity to promote participation in the electoral process. Come join us. Contact us to be on the mailing list for future updates.

The School of Good Citizenship builds on Melted Away. For over 10 years, we’ve placed massive sculptures of words carved in ice on streets and in city parks during historic events and the political conventions to let them disappear. The advent of the Coronavirus requires a different tack.

Every evening the Republican Convention convenes we will be streaming I Once Was Lost to lift the voices of Charlotte in song with 4 evenings of virtual choirs with choral groups based in and around Charlotte.
