Stay Tuned for Charlotte

Never Forget Isaac

We’ll be posting a timelapse video from Tampa later today with a new collection of stills from the ice melt.

We’ll be in Charlotte next Monday on the first day of the DNC with another Middle Class ice sculpture – where will it melt down faster: Tampa or Charlotte?

Is that a reflection of climate or policy?

Protecting the Middle Class

Police around the Middle Class – are they protecting the Middle Class? Or was it the occupiers that freaked them out?

Setting up in Lykes Gaslight Park – 11:30 AM

We’re almost set-up in Tampa. The ice carver finished a few letters on site – causing great consternation among the police.

Taking Tampa by Storm

Map of Hurricaine Isaac

Before we left Brooklyn for Tampa, we had the usual jitters: Do we have all the equipment? Will everything work? Is everything correctly organized? And then… we started hearing stories about Isaac heading for Florida…

We thought we would be taking Tampa by storm, but instead Hurricane Isaac’s taking us. What followed next was ever growing anxiety of how we could install this piece in pouring rain and 25 mph winds.

Of course the first idea, why not try to move the event by a day? Not the easiest thing to do. The city of Tampa had in place a very rigid permitting procedure, plus they hadn’t shown much flexibility.

On the Roads to the Conventions

We’re two weeks away from the Republican Convention in Tampa. We will be melting down a large ice sculpture of the words Middle Class in Lykes Gaslight Park and follow that with the same piece in Charlotte.

It’s been a process of fits and starts, at times frustrating, definitely challenging. We’re up against city bureaucracies, police departments, parks departments, you name it.

How did this start? Through friends, naturally. Some friends in Charlotte said, “Are you all going to do an ice sculpture at the convention.” Frankly, we hadn’t thought about it until they mentioned it.

Then, of course, “Yeah, why not.” Since we’d done them before in 2008. Then we thought if you do one, you might as well do both. So there we are.
